For this AMD Blog I decided to browse Sporcle.com, a website that allows access to thousands of quizzes on thousands of different topics in which you have a set amount of time to guess the answers. I typed “German” into the search box and played a few of the games/quizzes, these three were my favorites. It was a fun way to review some of the material that we learned in earlier chapters, and to acquire some “fun-fact” type knowledge. 1.) In this quiz you have to guess which countries consider German to be an official language, and which countries consider German speakers to be a significant minority. It turns out that Germany is considered to be an official language in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg, and is considered a significant language in the Chez Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Namibia, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia. http://www.sporcle.com/games/07bargem/german_speaking_countries 2.) In this quiz you have five minutes to guess the top 25 most frequently used verbs in German. Despite the fact that we have already learned most of these verbs in class I did quite poorly on this quiz. It turns out that the most commonly used German verbs are… sein, haben, werden, können, müssen, sagen, machen, geben, kommen, sollen, wollen, gehen, wissen, sehen, lassen, stehen, finden, bleiben, liegen, heissen, denken, nehmen, tun, dürfen, glauben http://www.sporcle.com/games/Lauro/german_verbs 3.) The final quiz I took was entitled “Can you name the phrases that a beginner might need in German?” It asked for translations of German, numbers 1-10, days of the week, months, colors, question words, greetings and greeting questions and answers, sorry, big, small, and some key phrases such as ich heisse… and ich weiss nicht. http://www.sporcle.com/games/jiggabelly/language-basics-german
